The Surgical Outpatient Clinic treats patients from various surgical fields, based on a referral. Emergency patients are usually admitted for examinations and treatment within one to two weeks and non-emergency patients within no more than three months. Some of the patients undergo special examinations before the appointment or during it. Some patients have a therapeutic procedure performed during their visit to the outpatient clinic. The patient can be seen by a surgeon, expert nurse, or both together. In addition, it is possible to book an appointment for an anaesthesiologist and a urotherapist/sexual health counsellor at the outpatient clinic.

The treatment is negotiated, planned and implemented in co-operation with the patient. Based on the referral information, a small minority of patients are transferred directly to the surgical waiting list. Follow-up for the treatment is arranged either by scheduling an appointment or a telephone consultation. Telephone consultation is an important means of complementing, and sometimes even substituting, outpatient care. Surgeons from other units also operate in the outpatient clinic facilities: paediatric surgeons, vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons, and orthopaedists.
